Beginner Fly Fishing Classes – March 8,2018


Begins Thursday March 8th, 2018 at 6:30 p.m., taught by the Connecticut Fly Fisherman’s Association. Classes will consist of 4 classroom sessions held at Cabela's in East Hartford, plus there will be two field days on Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. 1) Casting Class 2) On Water Instructions. Note: Dates for on water will be announced. Cost is $50 (non-members), $40 (members), $30 (16yrs. and under). Parent/guardian with child 16 and under, attends at waived fee. Added bonus – New participant non-members receive a free one year CFFA membership, valued at $25.00. Membership includes monthly meetings, newsletter and opportunities to expand fly fishing skills. Why Fly Casting is Different: Lines and Line Weights: Classification of Line Weights
Types of Fly Lines: Fly Rods: Design, Function, Action, Material, Fly Reels

March 15, Class 2. Characteristics of Trout and Diet of Stream Trout
Many fish can be taken on the Fly. ID Most Common Trout in the East. Trout Survival: Needs,
Characteristics, Diet, Aquatic Insects: Mayflies, Caddis flies, Stone flies.

March 22, Class 3. Stream Tactics
Location: Rise Types: Approach: Water Types: Pools, Reach, Pocket. Factors Determining Fly Selection-
Streamers and Buck tail, Wet and Nymphs, Dry.

March 29, Class 4. Leaders and Knots
Basic Advice on Tying Knots ( It is important not only to select the right knot for a particular job but to tie
it properly. Poorly Tied knots will mean lost fish and aggravation.)

Class 5 - April 7, Outdoor Live Casting Instruction
The Freshwater Fly Casting lessons will held at a pond in East Hartford.

Class 6 – April 28, On Water Fishing with CFFA Members – Live on water stream fishing on the Willimantic River. One on One Instruction. (Class date may be changed based on weather and attendee availability).

Note: There are no makeup dates for classes missed unless postponement due to inclement weather. In this case we will reschedule class.
